You’re here because you shower. A lot.And now you’re wondering if you’re actually addicted to showering. Okay, while ‘addicted to showering’ isn’t really a thing, what is a thing (and a problem) is showering too often.

At first, you were probably in denial.

“But it keeps me clean. At least I’m not a tramp!”

Then, you compared your own shower habits with those of a friend.

“How often do you shower?” you asked, out of curiosity.

“Five times a week,” they responded. “You?”

“Same,” you said quietly, yet knowing inside that you actually shower 100 times a week.

The thing is that, you know something isn’t quite right with your skin and hair. Is it because you’re washing yourself too much? It could be. Let’s take a look at these…

Top 10 telltale signs that you’re showering too often

10 MUST KNOW SIGNS YOU RE SHOWERING TOO OFTEN

Your Skin Itches – a Lot

Itchy skin is just horrible. It’s almost as bad as feeling pain.

Because constant showering inflames your skin, it takes away the natural proteins, fats and oils that keep your skin ticking over. Without these, your skin can start to itch – a lot.

Your Hair Is Greasy – All The Time

If your hair is greasy, it makes sense to shower, right?

Weirdly enough, washing your hair too often can actually cause your hair to become greasy. This means that, if you’ve showed so much that you’ve created an explosion of oils, showering to alleviate the grease is actually just going to make things worse.

What on earth?

The reason is that, when you shower excessively, your scalp begins to assume it needs to replace oils. As a result, produces too many of then.

When you shower literally all the time, you strip your hair of its natural oils. This then sets into place a cycle where you’re always washing while your hair becomes ever greasier.

And in a bit to stop the grease, you shower more – and produce even more grease.

The key is to remove the excess oil and dirt, but to avoid it drying out.

If you’re stuck in the viscous cycle at the moment, a good idea is to invest in a sulfate-free shampoo.

You Always Need to Shower After a Quick Workout

While most of us shower after a heavy gym session, if you literally have to shower even after a quick five minute workout, it’s a sign that you’re showering too much.

If you’re not even sweaty and don’t really need a shower, consider having a quick rinse with water instead.

Your Dandruff Just Won’t Go Away

We get it – you’ve got dandruff, so you’re going to wash your hair, right? Makes sense!

The problem is that if you literally shower twice a day every single dosh darn day, you’re not giving your oil glands the chance to do their job, which is to soothe your scalp the natural way.

And when they can’t do this, your scalp gets dry and begins to flake.

Take a few days off from shampooing your hairs before having another go. See if the situation improves.

You’ve Got Dry Skin

No one likes dry skin. It’s just so irritating! It itches, it flakes, it becomes sore – and it looks a mess.

While there are numerous causes of dry skin, from the time of the year to stress, one of the more uncommon causes of dry skin is excessive showering.

If you have dry skin and there doesn’t seem to be an obvious cause, your shower routine could be the prime culprit.

Frequent showers can damage your skin, as can staying under the water too long. How? It washes away your oils.

Oils are important because they keep your skin nice and soft, and they also lock in moisture. Without these natural oils, your complexion takes a turn for the worse and begins to look dried out. Not cool.

If you simply must shower twice a day, make the showers short.

You Struggle to Brush Your Hair

It’s a struggle because you literally have to use both hands to move your brush through your hair! It’s almost a battle and you know it shouldn’t be like this.

The reason? It could be that you’re showering too much.

Your Hair Breaks Way Too Easily

Hair is really important. The more gorgeous our mane looks, the more confident we feel.

So it really sucks when our hair not only breaks really easily – it also looks really frizzy.

While it’s important to shower and wash your hair to keep it looking healthy, too much showering can cause your sebum to be washed away before it’s had a chance to do its job. And when this happens, your hair might frizz and you might experience breakage.

Your Skin Is Red

Not only is it red, but it’s also super irritated. The reason? It could be that you’re washing yourself too much.

But we get it – why on earth would excess washing cause our skin to redden?

Your skin comprises numerous layers, including a so-called ‘horny layer’ that protects our skin from irritants. If you shower too much, you might strip away this protective layer, thus exposing your skin to irritants that damage your skin and turn it red.

You’re Losing Your Hair Colour

No one wants to lose their hair colour, especially when we’ve already spent lots of money getting it just right.

If you shower too often, you’re as good as throwing money away.

Minerals found in shower water are basically anti-colour. They will dull blondes and strip colour and richness from other colours, including brown, black and red.

If you shower too often, you’re in real danger or screwing up your hair colour and ruining your next night out. Not cool.

Your Scalp Itches

An itchy scalp is usually a sign that the pH balance of your hair has been screwed up.

And the reason for this is sometimes excess showering.

There’s no need to wash your hair with shampoo more than twice a week. If you’ve been killing it recently, consider cutting back to just once a week for a while.

Stay happy!
