Over time, teeth can become yellow and stained, through age and through the foods that you eat. It can really dent your self-confidence, if your teeth are not sparkling white, so read these ten simple home remedies for teeth whitening that work, but won’t cost you the earth:

1. Lemon juice

Lemon juice has some pretty powerful bleaching properties and it is one of the ideal home remedies for teeth whitening. Make a paste of fresh lemon juice, mixed with some salt, and gently scrub your teeth with this for about a minute. After this treatment brush your teeth immediately with your favorite toothpaste, it will help prevent enamel damage. If you keep this treatment up for a couple of days, you should be able see a difference in the whiteness of your teeth. Avoid doing this treatment is you have sensitive teeth

2. Holy Basil

Take some dried leaves of holy basil and grind them up into a powder. You can then mix the holly basil powder with your regular toothpaste, and the natural whitening properties of the leaves will brighten up your smile in no time at all.

3. Eat plenty of raw, crunchy fruit and vegetables

Any kind of crunchy vegetable or fruit will help keep your teeth white. Munching fruit and veg such as celery, carrots and apples, does just the same thing as your toothbrush would do, and it will help scrub away the stains. Fruit and vegetables also contain acids that are very effective at whitening your teeth, so you get a double benefit

4. Baking soda

Baking soda is one of the best home remedies for teeth whitening and is what is used in many commercial whitening types of toothpaste too. You can add a little baking soda to your regular toothpaste, or simply brush your teeth with a mixture of lemon juice and baking soda. You should only use baking soda once or twice a week, though, because overuse can wear away the enamel of your teeth.

5. Hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is another one of the well-known known home remedies for teeth whitening. The mild bleaching effect that it has will whiten your teeth over time, but be careful how you use hydrogen peroxide. Don’t swallow it and, if you notice any irritation to your gums or increased sensitivity in your teeth, you should stop using it straight away.

6. Strawberries

Vitamin C can also whiten your teeth and strawberries make a wonderfully tasty tooth whitening home remedy. Just rub your teeth with the paste of a couple of strawberries, once or twice a day, and in a couple of days time, you will notice the difference in your smile. Don’t forget to brush your teeth with your favorite toothpaste after strawberry treatment, it will help protect your enamel from damage.

7. Orange peel

Inner layer of orange peel is another one of popular home remedies for teeth whitening; it contains Vitamin C and calcium, which will strengthen your teeth too. Rub some orange peel over your teeth, before brushing them normally right before you go to bed, and it will remove any stains, and help to kill off any bacteria too.

8. Salt

Salt has been used for centuries as a natural teeth whitening remedy. You can use salt in the morning, in place of regular toothpaste, or you can mix it with some baking soda for a bit of extra whitening power. Be gentle with salt, though, because it is coarse and can damage the enamel on your teeth if you brush too hard with it.

9. Banana skin

Rubbing a banana peel on your teeth is another great way of whitening and strengthening your teeth. You get all the whitening power of the acids in the fruit, plus, you get the added bonus of minerals such as manganese, potassium and magnesium to strengthen your teeth as well

10. Always rinse with water after eating teeth staining foods

Some things that we eat and drink are particularly bad for staining teeth yellow. The above remedies are great for removing stains, but you can help prevent the stains by rinsing your mouth out with some fresh water after you have eaten foods like curry or beets, and drinking drinks like wine, coffee or tea.
