THE Pietermaritzburg School of Fashion Design will represent Pietermaritzburg at the Vodacom Durban July in style this year with four of their students being selected to compete in the #VDJ2019 Young Designer Award presented by the Durban Fashion Fair.

From an initial entry of 143 completed outfits for the award, a panel of judges shortlisted 25 designers of which 13 of the 25 were proudly from the Pietermaritzburg fashion school.

The finalists were then shortlisted further in the prestigious student designer competition held at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping.

Various students displayed garments of cutting-edge fashion and lateral creative thought, spurred on by onlookers as the judges agonised over the tough task of reducing the 25 semi-finalists to just ten finalists who will compete at the Durban July.

Of the ten finalist selected to compete, four have been selected from the Pietermaritzburg School of Fashion Design namely; Nospiho Ngcobo, Noxolo Ngubane, Nonjabulo Mfuphi and Mthobisi Hlongwane.

“This is an incredible achievement for these students to be recognised on this prestigious platform. I am thrilled and want to state my pride knowing that these students will be representing Pietermaritzburg,” said director of the fashion school, Priscilla Bhika.
