Thandiwe Newton Reclaims Zimbabwean Name As She Covers British Vogue’s Latest Issue
Thandiwe Newton is reborn and ‘taking back what’s hers’! You may know her as Thandie Newton but that isn’t exactly her correct name. Earlier on in her career, the British-Zimbabwean actor’s name was misspelt on the credit of her first film, Flirting, and the industry just adopted and carried on the name “Thandie”.
On the new cover for British Vogue‘s May 2021 issue, the star talks about taking back her name while rocking a low ponytail and an Isabel Marant metallic two-piece, finishing the look with gold hoop earrings and matching strappy heels.
The 2018 Best Supporting Actress Emmy winner tells Vogue that she will now go by Thandiwe Newton in TV and movie credits.
That’s my name. It’s always been my name. I’m taking back what’s mine, The thing I’m most grateful for in our business right now is being in the company of others who truly see me. And to not be complicit in the objectification of Black people as others, which is what happens when you’re the only one.
Thandiwe Newton also talks about how her career has developed over the years and her changing relationship with her craft. She later speaks on how her various cross-genre roles are aligned with her political activism.
Wherever I position myself now, I don’t want to be part of the problem, I want to be part of the solution. I’m not for hire anymore. I’m not going to speak your story or say your words if I don’t feel they could’ve come from me.
Ifind that acting takes more and more away from me because I’m more connected to myself than I’ve ever been, whereas before I was delighted to get an excuse to go off to another personality.
