In a new Vogue feature, the publication profiles Gambian tailor Baba Jagne whose work has caught the attention of top celebrities and their stylists including Cardi B, Chris Brown, Naomi Campbell, and much more.

With his namesake brand Jagne, the designer made his debut through his first collection presented to stylists in Los Angeles. He said to Vogue; “When you come from Africa, you are taught the fundamentals of garment construction. But when you get here, you don’t actually understand how to get into the industry. So I just started by doing the one thing that I can control, which was getting a sewing machine and starting to make clothes.

Now his brand is divided up into the Jagne Clothing Brand which offers ready-to-wear collections with designs between Afro-futurism and Afro minimalism, and the Jagne Design Space which is the more popular aspect of his business. Baba offers design, pattern making, fabric sourcing, and others. As well as tailoring and alterations for shoots, movie sets and for various high profile clients getting ready for award shows and events. One of his works which recently went viral is a monogrammed Louis Vuitton skirt which he expertly converted to a cute mini skirt and shirt set for Cardi B. Also the Mugler look she wore in the WAP video was tailored to perfection by Jagne.

These outfits and many others have plummeted Baba Jagne to the front lines since he began working with Cardi B and her stylist Kollin Carter. He said about working with her; “She’s an amazing person to work with because she’s a very chill person. I’ve made some things for her that will come out“.

Other celebrity looks he has redesigned include custom shirts and pants for a new Swae Lee video, a reworked Versace suit for Normani and a Stephane Rolland dress for Naomi Campbell, among many others.

On his work process, he told Vogue; “There will be times where you will be on no sleep for two or three days. That’s the nature of the beast—and I love it all.
